Assembly Speaker Silver’s leadership in question
The ethics commission inquiry by the organization known as JCOPE is expected to probe how the Assembly handles allegations of sexual harassment.
“There are procedures in place, they just weren’t followed in the cases I’ve read about,” said former assemblyman Michael Benjamin.
Michael Benjamin, a former Assemblyman, says the public sector should be better equipped to handle complaints than the private sector.
Benjamin said, “I would think that the public sector should be leading the private sector because we are talking about public confidence, public dollars. And the public does sort of look up to legislators. People give them a vote of confidence to represent them and pass laws. We should be hyper sensitive to what happened.”
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver announced in may that the Assembly’s procedures for addressing sexual harassment would be reviewed.
