Mitt Romney, Mormonism and the Curse of Blackness
As get closer to Election Day, we must do all can to rally African Americans to the polls in support of President Obama. Please read this Huffington Post article, “Mitt Romney and the Curse of Blackness,” written by Obery M. Hendricks, Jr., Ph.D. [Author of The Universe Bends Toward Justice: the Bible, the Church and the Body Politic (Orbis,2010)]. I believe that for many whites of ill-will this election is about “putting us back in our place.” Next year marks the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves in the Confederate States. Having Barack H. Obama serve his second term beginning in 2013 will cement our liberation and declare history’s repudiation of America’s racist past.
Consider what Dr. Hendricks has to say about Mitt Romney, the Republican Party’s “Great White Hope”
“It’s Mitt Romney’s religion that I find deeply troubling, particularly in light of the possibility that he could become the next president of this nation. What concerns me is this: the Book of Mormon, the book that Mitt Romney and all Mormons embrace as divinely revealed scripture that is more sacred, more true, and more inerrant than any other holy book on earth, declares that black people are cursed …”
That’s right. Cursed. And not only accursed, but lazy and aesthetically ugly to boot.
“And the Lord had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them (2 Nephi 5:21).”
“And I beheld, after they had dwindled in unbelief they became a dark and loathsome and a filthy people, full of idleness and all manner of abominations (1 Nephi 12:23).”
“O my brethren, I fear that unless ye shall repent of your sins that their skins will be whiter than yours, when ye shall be brought with them before the throne of God. (Jacob 3:8).
“And the skins of the Lamanites were dark, according to the mark which was set upon their fathers, which was a curse upon them because of their transgression and their rebellion against their brethren, who consisted of Nephi, Jacob, and Joseph, and Sam, who were just and holy men (Alma 3: 6).”

If conservative, white, Christian Republicans turn into little Judases and go against their Christian faith, which should be most dear to them, and throw their support behind the false Mormon minister, Mitt Romney, to so call “take our nation back”, whether they do it publicly or privately, will appear as racist to many Blacks and Latinos.

With all due respect and friendship, I tell you that you are “off base” on this one. There may be “some ill-willed” whites whose votes are being determined by their ridiculous prejudice – but the vast majority of “whites” who are planning to vote against Obama (such as me and many others that I personally know and have spoken to) are simply rejecting what we believe has been a failed presidency, and seeking to get him out before even more damage is done to our economy and national defense.
Points well taken but there is an element of “ill will” that I believe is rooted prejudice alone.
Our national economy is on the verge of recovery. Obama’s economic policies are beginning to take root.
On national defense, we’ve never been stronger. Our Navy projects our strength in dealing with Somali pirates, Iranian naval exercises and responding to international disasters. We have battle-tested forces. The Africa Command has been expanded to meet the Al Queda threat and growing Red Army presence in central Africa. The Russians have not made any military moves to threaten their neighbors. The Atlantic alliance is strong and our presence in the Pacific Rim undiminished.
The GOP talking points are 20 years out-of-date.
I have serious reservations with many of your pro forma “talking points” but these are all subjective on both our parts. My point was simply that anyone, particularly whites in this case, that are looking to defeat the incumbent president, are not necessarily thinking in terms of what I believe was an outdated and unsubstantiated claim, for the vast majority of us, of prejudice and ill will.
On the other hand, how should we regard voters of color; who are blindly anticipating voting for Obama, not on issues or evaluaton of the cadidates, but…..only because he is of color? Is that less racial than those who in their ignorance and lack of Godliness would carry any racial prejudice in their hearts and minds?
