The Green Party mayoral candidate Anthony Gronowicz was the first to arrive and be seated at the NYC Parents Mayoral Forum on Education. He was the most provocative speaker at Friday night’s education forum for parents and labor union activists.
Gronowicz repeatedly called Mayor Michael Bloomberg “the most destructive mayor in NYC history.” He attacked classroom overcrowding, economic inequality, and the presence of police in city schools.
Gronowicz earned loud and approving applause when he called more classroom resources and reduction in class sizes. He was particularly upset with Bloomberg for saying in an interview that he’d be “comfortable with 70 students in a classroom.” Gronowicz also called for the return of arts, music and dance to city schools.

Bloomberg was a good mayor and if you took education out of the equation a 4 level perfomance would be my score (using the NYC DOE report card system where 4 means exceeding the standard). Even in education Bloomberg started well: 18.5% raise for educators, a plan to improve utilization of educators in holding patterns due to poor evaluations or complaints, email communication that made system-wide expedient efficiency possible. The start sputtered and stopped when he hired the wrong people over and over to serve as Chancellor, alienated teachers and their union with insulting talk and threats that questioned their professionalism and capability, supported teaching to the test and test stress in general, put too much money in non-educator consultant contracts, gave too much power to principals and implemented a new principal preparation program that put too many culturally and environmentally disconnected trainees in position to be supervisors, tried too hard to make a business model work in a bureacracy built on altruistic and social service traditions, gave priority to business model charter schools, decided to close schools instead of re-designing them for success, and decided that tough talk and holding a contrary position to reform was better than collaboration. I welcome the Green Party candidate but if he plans to win by being anti-Bloomberg, he will lose. He must have a program above his criticism (that all the candidates seem to share). I will be voting for Bill Thompson as I am especially happy of the UFT endorsement of him)..

To encourage the mayoral candidates to focus on planning, the city’s four urban planning schools on May 4 sponsored a forum for six of them. Each was given 15 minutes to discuss the role he anticipated planning would play in his administration, his views on the role of planning as a government function and whether he would support providing planning staffs to Community Planning Boards. Perhaps most provocatively, the six were asked what type of person he would choose to head his planning department. Would he seek out a cross between Robert Moses, builder of mega projects, and Jane Jacobs, champion of mixed-use livable neighborhoods?
