Newcomer To Challenge Sen. Ruth Hassell-Thompson (D-Bx/Westchester)
On Wednesday, May 14, political newcomer Crystal Collins will announce her candidacy for New York State Senate District 36. Ms. Collins is challenging incumbent state senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson. Insiders say that Hassell-Thompson plans to run for Mayor of Mount Vernon next year and that no matter what happens this will be her last campaign for re-election to the state senate.
Crystal Collins’ press statement claims that she is dedicated to bridging the gaps in our communities. Collins says her campaign is about what can be done to improve the quality of life in all areas: jobs opportunities and economic growth, education, public safety and senior and youth services.
The announcement will take place 11am on Wednesday at 2061 Nereid Avenue (between Murdock and Wilder Avenues) in the Bronx.

About Crystal Collins for New York Senate
Crystal Collins is a Healthcare Manager of 20 years, a wife, parent of four growing boys, entrepreneur and community activist who is dedicated to educating, inspiring and uplifting men, women, and children.
She was raised in the Northeast Section of the Bronx, in the Edenwald housing projects. Crystal Collins began her life’s journey without a blueprint. Having been raised by a single mother, with seven siblings, life had its obstacles. Their family experienced great devastation in 1988, when their mother lost her battle to cancer.
At age 17, a high school drop-out, she had to grab life by the horns and devise a plan. In 1988, Crystal began her journey and enrolled in an applied college that afforded her to earn a General Education Degree (GED) and an Associate’s Degree, in Accounting. While attending Inteboro Institute, she began to tutor in areas of accounting, business law, finance and computers. Mentoring and coaching individuals in their desired career paths and future endeavors. Ms. Collins also, went back to school to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, from the College of Mount Saint Vincent and continues her Master’s studies in Allied Health with a concentration in Health Systems and Policies.
Crystal Collins professional experiences extend to various areas of the private sector in the heath care industry, she has branded the meaning of an upbeat, enthusiastic, compassionate and fun loving person who get’s the job done.
A life of trails and triumphs, she’s created a blueprint by sharing her story with whoever desires to hear and aspire to learn from her mistakes. Always participating and assisting in local community efforts that raise the level of awareness of our social emotional growth that’s being impeded. Ms. Collins participates in various programs, workshops, toy drives, coat drives, fundraisers and community events.
As the past Parent Teacher Association (PTA) President for the Bronx Middle School #370, she spearheaded the program efforts and committee, making it a program of success that continues today. She currently serves as a District Leader in the City of Mt. Vernon and as the Youth Director at the church she attends in the South Bronx.
In 2010, Ms. Collins established a grassroots organization, Bridging The Gap MV/BX, that focuses on raising the level of awareness through educating, empowering and improving the lives of the youth, young adults, and adults, in the inner cities. Her active participation in the community forums, workshops and community events exhibits her commitment to her community.
She has worked among some of New York’s top healthcare professionals and has aligned herself with elected officials and influential people to help make changes in her community.
