Experts point out that undiagnosed or untreated mental illness that often accompanies autism is more likely to blame for Adam Lanza’s deadly rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School, not the condition itself. Many tabloids have irresponsibly implied that Lanza’s reputed autism led him to murder his mother and 26 others –mostly children– at a nearby elementary school. Other so-called autism experts have described having access to guns as a “potentially lethal combination.” I believe their statements betray a personal bias against guns, rather than factual knowledge about autism and gun violence.
