The retirement of Brooklyn Congressman Ed Towns has set the stage for one of the most closely watched races this campaign cycle, and on Monday, the two Democrats running to replace him clashed during a debate on NY1’s “Inside City Hall.” NY1’s Bobby Cuza filed the following report.
When Congressman Ed Towns announced over the weekend he would support an old adversary, City Councilman Charles Barron, to succeed him, Barron’s opponent, Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries, said during a Monday debate on NY1’s “Inside City Hall” that the endorsement came as a surprise to the community.
“I understand that sometimes backroom political deals do occur,” Jeffries said during the debate.
“He sought his endorsement. Don’t be a sore loser,” Barron said shortly afterwards. “You know, you didn’t get this endorsement, so you shouldn’t go negative and immature like that.”
It was just one of many sharp exchanges during the Monday debate. Asked what law they are especially proud of, Jeffries cited legislation eliminating the New York City Police Department’s stop-and-frisk database.
