The lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith (Marion, Indiana)

Many of you are probably familiar with the “Photography and Postcards of Lynching in America” exhibit that came to NYC several years ago. This morning, I came across the Without Sanctuary web site. Please visit and share the link with your friends, family and children.

Searching through America’s past for the last 25 years, collector James Allen uncovered an extraordinary visual legacy: photographs and postcards taken as souvenirs at lynchings throughout America. With essays by Hilton Als, Leon Litwack, Congressman John Lewis and James Allen, these photographs have been published as a book “Without Sanctuary” by Twin Palms Publishers … Please be aware before entering the site that much of the material is very disturbing. We should never forget the atrocities committed against blacks in America. Once we confront and come to terms with our past, we can then confront and end the atrocities occurring in Africa today.
